Firefighters respond to F-16 fighter aircraft crash in California
The San Bernardino County Fire Department said it is supporting local China Lake emergency teams in suppressing a fire caused by the downed aircraft in the dry lake bed near Trona.
The pilot, the only person on board, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, the department reported.
"There is no threat to surrounding vegetation from the fire," the department posted on the US social media company X, advising the public to avoid the area while noting "there is no threat to the community."
The US Air Force Thunderbirds, the air demonstration squadron, confirmed that the pilot safely ejected from an F-16C at approximately 10:45 a.m. (1845GMT). The incident occurred during a training mission in controlled airspace.
“The pilot is in stable condition and receiving follow-on care,” the Thunderbirds said.
Control of the scene was assumed by Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and China Lake Emergency Management.
